Beyond the Coast: National Parks and Vineyards Near Hua Hin

Limestone peaks at Khao Sam Roi Yot

South of Hua Hin, Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park takes its name from the ‘mountain of three hundred peaks’. Limestone cliffs rise above coastal flats and wetlands, with the sea beyond.

The contrast between steep rock faces and low-lying water gives the park its distinctive character. Its wetlands also provide habitat for birdlife, making the landscape as rewarding to observe at ground level as from the hills.

Phraya Nakhon Cave and its royal pavilion

Inside Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, Phraya Nakhon Cave contains two large chambers whose collapsed roofs admit daylight. Vegetation grows beneath the openings, and sunlight reaches into the cavern through gaps in the limestone overhead.

A royal pavilion built in the late nineteenth century stands in the main chamber. Its delicate roofline contrasts with the surrounding rock, making it the cave’s most recognisable feature.

The approach includes a coastal trail and a climb through the limestone hills. Natural stone steps and uneven ground make this a more demanding outing than a level walk along the coast; the ascent is worth taking into account when planning a visit.

Monsoon Valley’s inland vineyards

Inland from Hua Hin, coastal scenery gives way to agricultural valleys and rolling hills. Monsoon Valley Vineyards, formerly known as Hua Hin Hills Vineyard, occupies a valley framed by ridges.

Rows of vines cover former farmland here. Vineyard tours explain how grape-growing methods are adapted to tropical warmth and seasonal rain, while wine tastings offer a chance to try the estate’s wines.

The appeal is also in the setting: long views across planted rows towards the surrounding hills, rather than the sea. For a less strenuous alternative to the cave climb, the vineyard offers a different way to spend time beyond Hua Hin’s beachfront.
